Transportation

Transportation is necessary to move goods between different locations. It is also an important part of the range of goods we offer our customers. At Gekås, we choose the most energy-efficient modes of transport, environmentally friendly fuels, improve energy efficiency and avoid unnecessary transport so that the environmental and climate impact of transport is as small as possible.

At Gekås, we have chosen to divide the concept of transportation into an external part and an internal part. The external part concerns the transportation of goods we import from abroad. The internal part concerns the transportation of goods between our central warehouse and the department store, our company cars and service cars.

External transport

When transporting goods produced outside Sweden, we primarily choose boat transport, as it is a more gentle alternative than, for example, transport by air. Once the boat has arrived at the port in Halmstad or Gothenburg, the goods are picked up by a local haulage company for truck transportation to Ullared. Only 1.5% of our external transportation is by air.

Internal transport

All internal transportation of goods, from the central warehouse Sönneräng to the department store, is done with our own trucks. All trucks run on environmental diesel. During the high season, the trucks drive between Sönneräng and the warehouse every 10 minutes, so we are very careful about the degree of filling when we pack our trucks so we do not drive unnecessarily.

All company cars are electric hybrids, biogas cars or environmental diesel cars and there are several possibilities to charge the car. There is a biogas filling station at the Gekåsbyn reception.

We also have a number of service vehicles operating within Ullared; these vehicles are smaller electric vans.

Sonneräng

Since 1998, we have had our own 50,000 m² central warehouse in Ullared. Almost all goods arrive at Sönneräng before they end up on the shelves inside the warehouse. For those goods that are classified as dangerous, such as flammable or corrosive, there are two specific rooms at Sönneräng that have extra fire protection, one for liquids and one for aerosols.
